It's Time to Say Goodbye to the "Cheese"

(No, Not the real stuff. Let's be real, I subsist on Cheese!)

We Are More Than a Smile

If your kids are anything like mine, they hit a point as they get older when the camera elicits one of two responses....they either start performing or they protest being photographed at all. Our culture conditions us to expect certain 'looks' when a camera is around. "Smile!" "Say cheese!" I've always wondered why we insist kids smile so much when humans have such an incredible array of emotions. Are we afraid of complexity when we document our kids? I'm not sure. BeTween sessions focus on the age group of kids who are sort of in that in-between of childhood and adult.

Give Your Kids Permission to Be Themselves

This age group, the tween group, between 10 and 14, are figuring out who they are. They are starting to push back on ideas we've had about them, and they are carving out their own styles. Identity is powerful, and no one is working through that concept more than a tween or pre-teen. I've always been fascinated by the in-betweens and the truth that resides in those spaces. I'm particularly fascinated by this age group; they seem to be walking the line of childhood and teenager and dipping their toes on each side, sometimes simultaneously. I want to document that for you and your tween, which is why I've started offering tween photos in my downtown studio in Cheyenne.

Only Smile If You Want To

Give your tween the power to decide how they want to be portrayed. They will show up in clothes they want to wear and have chosen for their session. They pick their own hairstyles, accessories and (optional) props for the session. When they come in for their photos, I am going to give some loose prompts for posing, but I will insist that they only smile if they want to.

Truth = Magic

I want your tween to bring the attitude and expression. I want them to bring their full selves to this experience, with all the myriad of emotions of the complexity of identities they are forming. The result? I hope your child sees the truth of how amazing they really are, especially during a time when they are figuring out how to navigate their changing world. And I want you as a parent to remember the incredible complexity of this time between childhood and adulthood.

How It Works

Book your tween session directly through my calendar scheduling or hit the Contact button above to get in touch.

01

Let Them Make the Decisions

Your tween or pre-teen (ages 10-14) shows up only in the clothes they want to wear and have chosen for their session. A good rule of thumb is for them to wear something they feel great wearing. They also pick their own hairstyles, accessories (hats, jewelry etc) and any props (totally optional) that they want to bring for the session.

02

Watch them Be themselves

When they come in for their photos, I am going to give some loose prompts for posing. I will tell them where to stand or sit, what to do with their hands and feet, and wear to look. Here's the kicker, though....I will insist that they only smile if they want to.

You'll end up with a gallery of images that show so much more than just a smile.

"Fitting in" is becoming who you think you need to be in order to be accepted.

Belonging is being your authentic self and knowing that no matter what happens, you belong to you.

True belonging never asks us to change who we are. True belonging requires us to be who we are.
